Waikato Bridge

  • Major Infrastructure Addition: Opening mid-2024, the new Peacocke Bridge will support Hamilton’s growth, connecting up to 20,000 future residents with a four-lane structure featuring pedestrian and bike paths and no piers in the river.

  • Cultural & Environmental Design: The bridge includes a single Y-shaped pier to protect native bat habitats, rust-colored woven steel supports symbolizing te ao Māori, and design elements aligned with iwi partnerships.

  • Transport Network Upgrades: The project includes a 1.6km extension to Wairere Drive, urban road upgrades, underpasses, bike paths, new roundabouts, and essential utility infrastructure.

  • Engineering Feat: Two 200-tonne steel lattice structures were lifted into place using one of New Zealand’s largest crawler cranes, marking a major milestone in construction.

  • Retaining Wall & Abutment Design: The retaining system covers 920m² and reaches 10m high, supported by deep 40m pier foundations and reinforced with Paraweb strips for slope and seismic stability.

  • Seismic Resilience: Advanced design features like heavy headwalls, settlement gaps, and hybrid gravity/reinforced wall sections ensure long-term structural integrity under seismic and service-related loads.
