Wall Specifications: Free Standing 700-foot-long, 17,000 sq. ft. including over 850 precast blocks—most being the massive 24-86 units. Some wall sections reach up to 51 feet tall and are reinforced with concrete infill and vertical steel rebar for strength and safety.
Unique Engineering: The L-shaped wall (334-foot West Wall and 362-foot North Wall) features a 4-inch setback per course to match the slope of the presplit rock face. Capstones with rock anchors provide additional stability.
Site Safety & Construction Challenges: Extensive safety measures were required during footing construction, including trench boxes to protect workers from rockfall. 1,600 cubic yards of concrete were used for footings and block infill.
On-Site Rock Processing: Roughly 450,000 cubic yards of granite were blasted on-site and processed through a complex mobile crushing and screening operation, producing a wide variety of materials for backfill and commercial sale.
Wall Design & Construction: Manufactured by MBO Precast and constructed by Onyx Corporation in Woburn, MA, as part of a 12-acre development project is one of New England’s largest and tallest free-standing block walls.
-
Massive Project Scope: Broccolini Construction was tasked with building Canada’s largest Amazon Fulfillment Centre—2.8 million sq. ft.—on a tight 14-month timeline.
-
Critical Site Challenge: A retaining wall was needed to protect the facility’s parking lot from erosion due to a large berm near Highway 416, with limited space that ruled out tiebacks.
-
Stone Strong Selected: Paterson Engineering recommended Stone Strong’s gravity wall system for its proven performance and ability to reach the required 8.7m height without tiebacks.
-
Fast, Efficient Construction: R.W. Tomlinson completed the retaining wall build in just 4 months, aided by the simplicity and speed of Stone Strong installation.
-
Custom Block Production: M CON Products manufactured 1,779 blocks—including 325 custom precast mass extenders in 4 depth variations—to accelerate construction during winter.
-
Outcome: The Stone Strong system provided a durable, space-efficient, and timeline-friendly solution for a massive infrastructure project with strict constraints.
-
Project Overview: Lynchburg College’s $12M student center expansion included building a substantial 20+ foot retaining wall to support a new roadway on steep, sloping terrain.
-
Innovative Dual-Purpose Design: Instead of a typical wall, the project team created a unique retaining wall that doubles as a rock climbing wall — a first-of-its-kind feature on campus.
-
Stone Strong Systems Chosen: The large-format, visually striking Stone Strong precast blocks met structural and aesthetic needs, delivering the “wow” factor Lynchburg desired.
-
Complex Wall Composition: The design combined three walls — one steel-reinforced geogrid wall and two gravity walls — spanning 12,500 square feet and reaching heights over 24 feet.
-
Efficient Production & Installation: Blocks production started early in February 2013; construction began in April, overcoming weather delays to complete the wall in just four months.
-
Student Experience Enhanced: After construction, local climbing professionals outfitted the wall with climbing fixtures and safety gear, providing students with an exciting on-campus recreational amenity.
When a regional hospital needed to upgrade their parking lot space, including terraced parking, stairs and pedestrian access to different tiers, a large block modular wall system was the first choice. When a stream needed rerouted for the project without using any mechanical tie back, Stone Strong Systems was the first choice.
